Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in a deadly single-vehicle crash on McKnight Boulevard late Tuesday afternoon. The crash left a 17-year-old girl dead. A 16-year-old girl and man in his 50s both continue to fight for life in hospital after a rollover crash on McKnight Boulevard.
Witness Jan Ginther tells Global News the vehicle went out of control around 5 o’clock near 68th Street NE. “We saw an SUV kind of swerve over on the other lane. He just came across the meridian [sic] and it rolled numerous times.”
Adam Loria with EMS says all three occupants were thrown from the vehicle. “Obviously quite serious, traumatic injuries–both external and internal injuries.”
Ginther, a nurse, and her husband Kurt, a firefighter from Innisfail, were among several people who went to help. “I sat with the one girl. My husband was sitting with the man. She was having a difficult time breathing and I did a jaw-thrust on her, held her and told her she was loved and that somebody would be here soon.”
Police Sergeant Dave Dentandt says considering the incident happened during rush hour it’s fortunate the situation wasn’t worse. “It’s very lucky that there weren’t any other vehicles going eastbound at the time on McKnight because then you would have looked at multiple vehicles and more people being injured.”
