Mayor Naheed Nenshi calls it a big day as part of the city charter process.
The city and two local school boards have signed a memorandum of understanding on developing joint use of school sites.
Part of a proposal in the city charter allows the city to work with school boards in how to utilize space that has been designated as school use.
The Mayor says that could have huge implications in how things are built, land is shared and communities are built.
For example, he says, there could be school use on the ground floor of a building and there could be seniors housing above, or a school site could even contain a fire hall.
Nenshi says the city charter allows the school boards and the city to work together without having to run to the province for approval.
