Calgary Police now say a double shooting in the northeast neighbourhood of Redstone Tuesday night was gang-related.
A 38-year-old man was found dead in the front passenger seat of a vehicle inside the attached garage of a home on Redstone Manor. His common-law wife, a 34-year-old woman, who was driving the vehicle, was critically wounded and rushed to hospital where she died. A 5-year-old boy, also in the vehicle, was not injured.
Police say the woman was known to them and had a lengthy history with criminal organizations. They add at least one of the victims was the intended target.
“There’s really only two ways out of this lifestyle,” Inspector Don Coleman told reporters Wednesday morning about life in gangs. “Police-assisted exit strategy or what happened last night. So clearly, there’s long memories involved and your best chance at survival and exiting this lifestyle is to come forward and let us give you a hand.”
Names will be released after autopsies are performed later today.
Several family members were inside the home when the shooting occurred and have been spoken to by homicide investigators.
Police have not released suspect or vehicle descriptions.
