The provincial body that investigates incidents involving police is looking into two officer involved shootings in Calgary on the weekend that occured within the span of an hour.
In one incident, a police officer responding to a disturbance complaint at the Marlborough LRT station, chased a machete-wielding man into the Sears store at Marlborough mall Saturday afternoon.
ASIRT executive director Susan Hughson says the suspect was taser without effect. “As the officer retreated and attempted to draw his service weapon, the man came at the officer and struck the officer with the machete causing a significant and severe injury. The officer fired his service weapon and the man was struck and fell to the ground.” Both remain in hospital. The suspect had life threatening injuries, but is now listed in serious but stable condition. Hughson says things could have ended a lot worse. “It’s a very good thing that no-one died in that incident.”
About an hour earlier Saturday, police were involved in another incident in which a shot was fired at a vehicle attempting to flee police drove straight at an officer.
No-one was injured in the shooting and the 23-year-old suspect was tasered and arrested after crashing into a gas meter, then some trees and attempting to flee on foot. A 15-year-old girl from the vehicle was taken into custody but faces no charges.
Hughson, who has been in her role for two years, says she can’t recall when two officer-related firings happened in the same day, let alone in the same hour.
