Good things do happen to good people, case in point as word got out this morning that Mikael Backlund had been added to Sweden’s World Cup roster with Henrik Zetterberg unable to answer the bell.
You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who has anything to do with the Flames uttering a discouraging word about this kid. Over hyped as a first round pick in 2007, Backlund fought to establish himself with a team that at times seemed like it had given up on him. The turning point came in the 2012-13 season. A year before, injuries had plagued Backlund, and the team responded with a slap in face one year 725 thousand dollar contract offer. He responded with 16 points in a lockout shortened season, good enough to earn him first a two, and then a three year contract extension, and last season he was able to crack the 20 goal plateau for the first time posting a career high 47 points.
This will be the 4th time Backlund has represented Sweden as a pro, the other three coming in World Championships. This will be the biggest stage yet for a guy who’s earned his time in the limelight.
