A master electrician by trade, now owns a business that’s booming.
On Feb. 15 John McMillan will have owned Whitbie’s Fish and Chips in Lethbridge for seven years.
“This was your dream to open up a fish and chip shop?” asks Bruce
Owning a fish and chip restaurant was on McMillan’s bucket list.
“As a kind in Scotland…I don’t know why I was always fascinated with the fish and chip truck when it came around,” says McMillan.
Despite fulfilling his lifelong dream, McMillan’s shop became a victim of the struggling economy.
“We were going down the tube,” says McMillan.
However, the universe worked its magic bringing one hungover patron into Whitbie’s for some fish and chips.
McMillan says after the man paid for his meal, he said he was going to help him attract more customers.
“He had 2,000 friends on Facebook,” says McMillan. “That didn’t mean anything to me, I have no idea what that new media is about.”
Now his booming business is being talked about in many different countries and people happily wait for their meals.
“Ninety-nine per cent of them have a big smile on their face and they’re lined up all over the place,” says McMillan.
