Members of Calgary city council have expensed costs for everything from flowers and parking tickets to a portrait session and a mattress.
For 2016 each ward had a $283,000 budget allocation for expenses, which includes assistants’ salaries which are not reported.
Among the expenses were a $38 parking ticket, meals, gifts, pens and pencils and fridge magnets. Unusual items included a popcorn machine rental, a suite at a Calgary Flames game, a $600 portrait session and two mattresses purchased for families living in extreme poverty.
Other expenses included cellphone bills, employee recognition, external communication and polling costs.
Ward 8 councillor Evan Woolley expensed the most at $24,258. Other top spenders included Shane Keating, Gian-Carlo Carra, and Andre Chabot.
The city has a ward-by-ward breakdown.
