Nexen Energy is laying off about 350 workers after making the decision not to restart a facility at an Alberta oilsands operation.
The company shut down an upgraded at the Long Lake site after an explosion in January killed two people.
Nexen says a short-term fix for the upgrader is not feasible so it’s putting it into winter preservation mode with no date set for a restart.
The company says the explosion was the result of work being performed outside the scope of approved work activities.
Meanwhile Nexen has finished up an investigation into a pipeline leak last year that spilled about five million litres of bitumen, sand and produced water.
The company says the rupture happened on June 11th, about a month before it was discovered by a contractor and was a result of incompatible pipeline design for the muskeg ground conditions.
