A new report on workplace accidents finds Albertans are not getting an accurate picture of the number of on-the-job injuries and fatalities.
The Parkland Institute suggests both the provincial government and Workers’ Compensation Board need to to do a better job in providing more accurate information to the public.
It has 10 recommendations, including regular updates of investigations and prosecutions, and increased public reporting of “worst performing” employers.
The report looked at a study on newspaper coverage of workplace accidents, which found that despite making up less than one per cent of workplace incidents, fatalities were featured in almost 80 per cent of articles.
The institute says that creates the false impression that workplace incidents are “deadly but rare.”
The report was released Wednesday, ahead of the April 28th Day of Mourning.
