A 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital with potentially life threatening injuries Thursday night after being hit by a vehicle while riding his bike in the northeast.
EMS says the incident happened at Castleridge Boulevard and Westwinds Drive NE at around 6:30.
Witnesses tells Global News it appeared the boy was trying to cross the busy roadway against the light when he was struck by a van.
Mark Hughes saw it happen.
“The light turned green, we started proceeding through. As I was going through I noticed a young boy started riding his bike across, against the light. I looked in the rear-view mirror and that’s when I seen the boy wasn’t paying attention to the traffic and the gentleman in the van, he struck him at that time.”
Reginald Reddy says he saw the van coming and honked his horn and shouted to try to get the boy’s attention but he did not hear him.
Witnesses the boy was not wearing a helmet.
His condition has been upgraded to serious, but stable.
