The CalgaryNEXT project enters it’s next phase of consideration. Exactly which direction that development takes is unclear. However, we can say the discussions seems to have taken three paths.
Path one is building a fieldhouse, sometime, somewhere—without the football team involved. This facility is so badly needed here, it should be a top priority.
Path two is the Flames home. The city administration report seemed to push the arena towards the Stampede grounds. It may end up on the current Big Four site. Time will tell.
Path three is the Stampeders home. The current sentiment is to renovate McMahon Stadium on the current site. Listen, renovate McMahon if you must, but have a building plan in place, too. The administration report suggests the stadium could have it’s life extended by 25 years if $70-80 millions are spent appropriately.
Nonsense. The stadium needs to be redone, not reconfigured. Steal the best from the building—the sightlines—to incorporate to a new strucutre. But dump the rest of the mid-2oth century infrastructure.
When the building are finally built, McMahon needs to be on the build list. Not the reno list.
