The Alberta Liberals are raising concerns over the number of Alberta Health Services employees on long-term disability.
Data in a Freedom of Information request by the Liberals shows the number workers from three unions who are on long term disability has doubled in three years. And so have the costs.
The cost for United Nurses of Alberta members on long-term disability went from $8.5 million to almost $17-million over three years. While the total cost of sick leave for UNA members last year was more than $65-million.
Liberal leader David Swann says, “It is abundantly clear that something is very wrong inside the culture at AHS.” Swann blames lack of leadership in the most expensive government organization in the province.
The FOIP data also shows the number one overall cause of long term disability was mental illness.
