It's an area of a football team that is not always very visible. But one area the Calgary Stampeders are excelling in is punt team coverage. In the Canadian Football League of today, that's an important asset.
The league is full of dynamic retuners. The Stamps may have the best in Larry Taylor. But Chris Williams in Winnipeg, Chad Owens in Toronto, Tristan Jackson in Edmotnon, among others, are a handful for opponents.
To date the Stamps have been receiving pin-point punting from Rob Maver. He has placed the ball exactly where special teams coach Mark Kilam has requested. That allows the coverage units to swarm to the ball carrier and hold opponents to small returns. In fact, opponents have returned the ball an average of just 5.8 yards per return. Contrast that with Calgary returners gaining 12.3 yards per return.
It's a small battle that the Stamps are winning. And against Toronto this weekend, it's a battle to watch carefully.
