Alberta has suspended the use of the Agriflu influenza vaccine

The Public Health Agency of Canada recommened the suspension as a precautionary measure after a white particulate matter was discovered floating in the vaccine in Europe.

Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada are working with the vaccine manufacturer Novartis to review the product for safety and effectiveness.

All public health clinics, physicians and pharmacists have been asked to stop using the vaccine until the federal review is completed.

Protein aggregates in vaccine vials do occur and are not linked to any safety or efficacy issues.

There are no reports of adverse effects from the vaccine in Alberta.

Agriflu is one of three available vaccines offered throughout the province during its annual influenza immunization campaign. It comprises only 22 per cent of the Alberta's total vaccine supply.
