A local public health professional is applauding the Calgary Catholic School District for its decision to reopen discussions with parents about vaccinating teen girls against HPV. The school board made the decision last night to hold consultations with parents in the coming weeks. Juliet Guichon, a public health professor at the University of Calgary, says researchers studied to see if there was any link between having the vaccine and making girls promiscuous and a link was not found. Bishop Fred Henry has strongly opposed the HPV vaccination on moral and religious grounds but the board has decided to rethink its policy based on medical evidence that shows the vaccine is a benefit to teens and prevents cervical and other types of cancers.
