Pilot project to help homeless veterans

The Federal Government, through two departments, is initiating a pilot project aimed at helping veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
The project will involve community organizations and be in four cities including Calgary.
The Calgary Homeless Foundation bought a building in the Beltline a couple of years ago and will use it to house 15 veterans.
It's based on a successful project in the United Kingdom where support is veteran centered with a military like environment in the housing facilities.
Federal Human Resources Minister Diane Finley says key to this will be using other veterans as mentors.
"Central to this environment is the implementaiton of peer support.   Support where other veterans use their experience help current veterans."
Human Resources and Veterans affairs are providing nearly half a million dollars in support for the Calgary portion of the project.
