A Calgary lawyer hopes to have his suit against the Alberta government heard later this fall or early next year on the banning of private health insurance for medically necessary services. John Carpay is supporting two people who had to pay thousands of dollars of their own money to get the health care they required in the U-S because of the current system in Alberta. Carpay says he wants the 2005 Supreme Court of Canada decision that struck down the Quebec law that banned private insurance extended to Alberta. Darcy Allen practiced dentistry in Okotoks until his back pain forced him to stop in 2009. He spent nearly 80 thousand dollars to get needed surgery in Montana after being put on a waiting list which had him line up for surgery in 2010 which then got pushed back almost another year.
