The Calgary Humane Society is distancing itself from the Vancouver Humane Society's campaign to get calf roping removed from the Stampede. The Calgary organization has been silent throughout the campaign, and spokesperson Christie Thompson says that's because the Calgary Humane Society is a shelter, which upholds current laws, while the Vancouver group, which doesn't even house animals, is there to push for change.
At the same time Thompson says the Calgary Humane Society has always opposed the use of animals for entertainment in a case where they could suffer. The Vancouver campaign placed an ad in a Calgary weekly paper today suggesting a calf should get the same gentle treatment as a human baby. The group wants to see calf roping banned from all rodeo events across Canada.
