Tens of thousands of oilsands workers will face random drug and alcohol tests. Suncor, Canadian Natural Resources, Total, Construction Trades Canada, the Constructruction Building Owners and others are joining forces in a two-year testing pilot project. This despite an upcoming case at the Supreme Court of Canada on random alcohol testing in New Brunswick. Pat Atkins with the Drug and Alcohol Risk Reduction Pilot Project tells the Rob Breakenridge Show on QR77 it's a safety issue. Atkins says the pilot project will give industry and government some baseline data on the extent of the problem and how best to address it. In 2009, the Alberta Court of Appeal ruled employers in Alberta have the right to impose drug and alcohol policies. Unions have called the plan a humiliating invasion of privacy which has no proven effect on safety.
