If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Or if you're the Alberta government just close the kitchen altogether. The spring sitting of the legislature ended Wednesday about three weeks earlier than expected. The Redford government will tell you that its work was done and it was time to hit the BBQ circuit. On the surface it would be correct. A deal with the doctors and teachers was completed, a much thinner budget was brought in and a ream of new schools were announced. Scratch the surface and you'll uncover a number of issues the government wished would go away. Lots of criticism about that cost cutting budget, flip flopping on such decisions as charging veterans for hospital parking, a Tory MLA stepping aside while his business dealings are investigated, a lack of transparency when it comes to millions of dollars in severance payments in the premier's ...

Remind me in my next life to pick better friends. Correction. Pick richer friends. I want a friend who would think nothing of writing me a cheque for thousands of dollars to help me get out of some hot water. That's obviously the kind of friends Senator Mike Duffy has. The Prime Minister's right hand man, Nigel Wright got Duffy out of the Senate housing expense fiasco by writing him a cheque for more than 90 thousand dollars. That cheque was enough to cover the Senator's tracks on some questionable housing expenses. Duffy wasn't lumped in with two other senators last week who were ordered to repay their improper expenses because he had reportedly paid back the full amount two months earlier. Now we know that he paid it back thanks to his close friend Mr. Wright. A payment that came with no strings attached. A gift from one friend ...
