Catholic Schools should allow HPV Vaccine
Posted 10/17/2012 2:21:00 PM

I just got my flu shot and now I can't wait to find as many people suffering from the flu and kiss them, after all I'm protected from the illness.  Pretty illogical thinking, that just because I have been vaccinated I'm going to change my behaviour ... but that is how Calgary Bishop Fred Henry appears to be thinking when it comes to the HPV vaccine.  The bishop has been dead set against allowing Catholic Schools in our city to provide the vaccine to young girls. This despite the fact the vaccine has been shown to protect against cervical cancer due to sexual activity.  The bishop says allowing the vaccine will make its recipients more promiscuous.  A study released this week found no basis for that argument. It monitored the behaviour of almost 14 hundred girls and found no increase in pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases or requests for contraceptives among girls who received the vaccine compared to those who didn't. The bishop contends this is a moral issue. It's not, it's a health issue and one that shouldn't be ignored.  A teenager, girl or boy, will be promiscuous for a number of reasons , but having a vaccine isn't one of them.  Preventing promiscuity has more to do with education and self worth than a prick in the arm.
