We're not so easily confused Mr. Horner
Posted 10/16/2012 12:48:00 PM

I know we're simple folk but not so simple that we don't understand when our province is in financial trouble. In August Finance Minister Doug Horner presented the first quarter financial update. The update was thin on details. Unlike past documents, this one was missing some key information like financial assets and capital planning. Mr. Horner had defended his decision to pare down the report saying this summary would be easier for the public to understand. That was something the Auditor General didn't understand and now he is investigating the Finance department to see if it conformed to the province's Accountability Act. An Act that has been around almost twenty years ago when the province wanted to show Albertans all the details, complicated as they may seem to the Redford government, to every Albertan. The first quarter update was so skimpy on details that instead of projecting a specific deficit, Mr. Horner gave a range ... and it was a big range, anywhere from 2.3 to 3 billion dollars. I realize alot depends on the price of oil, but past government forecasts have always set a specific target. Of course the 2.3-3 billion dollar figure is much higher than the 900 million deficit that was forecast in the February budget. Maybe Mr. Horner thought Albertans would find a range, rather than let's say 3 billion, a little easier to swallow, because remember we're simple folk and we don't want to be confused with a bunch of numbers.
