Schools look for new resources
Posted 10/11/2012 1:21:00 PM
What's in a name?  If you're the Calgary Board of Education it could be a computer lab or maybe a gymnasium.  The CBE is looking closely at naming classrooms and other spaces after corporations with deep pockets.  It won't go so far as to allow an entire school to be named after a donor .... yet.  I think it's a sad statement on a very real problem.  The board is having to look for alternate revenue sources in order to provide students with a top education. You could argue, and the government will, that it gives all school boards enough money, they just have to spend those dollars wisely.  However at some point we've got to stop using that argument.  I'm not crazy about the idea of allowing corporations into our classrooms, but I'm also realistic enough to understand at some point we're going to have to rethink the funding formula to ensure our kids are getting the best education
