Just in time for Father's day…no, not some sale on socks and ties, but a study that concludes dads have just as big a role to play in the development of their children as moms. Sure you might think that's obvious, but over the years it seems dads have taken a backseat in the family, whether it be through divorce, or busy lifestyles, moms have become the emotional and financial providers. However, an international study has found that a father's love contributes as much, and sometimes more to a child's development as that of a mother's. It goes one step further in saying parental rejection or acceptance is key to a child's development, more so when it comes to dads. A father's acceptance gives kids a strong sense of self and acts as a buffer against substance abuse or depression. Obviously a child needs the love of both parents, but the strong love of a dad is even more beneficial than previously thought. Here's to loving parents, but this weekend, maybe an extra hug for dad.
