There was a time when visitors to our city would remark on how clean it was. That has definitely changed over the years.
That’s why I love the idea that a Newfoundland community is rolling out. Discouraged by all the empty disposable coffee cups that litter Corner Brook, Nfld., the city has decided to incentivize people to pick up the trash by offering a nickel for each cup.
I think it’s an idea worth exploring. However, instead of a city paying for the litter, what about a recycling fee just like the ones on liquor and pop bottles tacked onto every take out coffee cup?
That would mean more money in the hands of the homeless and organizations that collect bottles to raise funds – and less trash in our city.
