Lanny McDonald got his call to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992, a year later, The Alberta Sports Hall came a-callin. Now, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame has finally gotten in on the act. McDonald goes in as part of this year’s class that also includes locals Cindy Klassen and Carol Huynh. About time.
In a brief speech at Wednesday’s induction announcement, Lanny thanked his dad, who told him to make sure he was remembered as much for what he did off the ice as on it. Those are words the Hanna native has taken to heart. McDonald’s best known for his work with Special Olympics, and if you can watch the tape of him choking up leading the Special Olympics pledge without getting a little weepy yourself, you’re made of stone.
Almost two decades after his playing career ended, the name ‘Lanny McDonald’ remains synonymous with class and service in this city. So while it may have taken the Canadian hall a while to get around to him, today’s announcement is as much about the man after hockey as it is about 500 goals and a Stanley Cup.
