The man accused of flying from Australia to Edmonton to have sex with a 13-year-old girl has entered a plea of not guilty.
On Feb. 10, The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s (ALERT) Child Exploitation Unit arrested a man in his hotel room.
Police were alerted after the girl’s mother found conversations between a man and her daughter.
“In conversations with their daughter, the mother just felt like something wasn’t quite right what the daughter was planning for the weekend,” Dave Dubnyk with ALERT said after the arrest. “Her intuitions told her to explore it a little bit further and in doing so she went into the daughter’s cell phone and discovered these text messages.”
Jiashu Weng, 22, was charged with luring a child under 14, possession of child pornography and distributing child pornography.
He has elected to be tried by judge and jury. Trial dates are expected to be scheduled on May 12.
