Ever have one of those moments where you wish you could grab the words coming out of your mouth as you say them, and shove them back in, never to be spoken? I’m wondering if that’s how Ken King felt after having a few select words twisted out of context to make it sound as if the Flames were playing the ‘Team threatens to move without new building paid for taxpayers’ card.
King was stating that without some kind of new building, the Flames would move. Period. Nothing about where that building is or who pays for it. To be honest, I never even thought of asking King about the move “threat” when I spoke to him last week, following the mayor’s ill-thought out suggestion that CalgaryNEXT was dead. CSEC and its properties want to succeed here.
We’re asking the wrong questions here, hidden behind the straw man of taxpayer funding. Why is the mayor so stuck on the East Village-Stampede location? Is his vanity project viable without a central attraction like a new arena? Is the city beholden to the Stampede and its expansion plans because the parking revenue the ‘Dome generates would disappear if the Flames leave Victoria Park?
It’s not just about the obvious, people. This is a huge project with generational ramifications for Calgary. All of these questions need to be asked and answered.
