Nice to see our provincial politicians back at it. They’ve had plenty of time away from the legislature and so much has happened during that time. Topping that list is a “little” thing called the Carbon Levy, which we all know is a tax. That “tax” topped the list of questions opposition MLAs posed during question period.
Wildrose Leader Brian Jean started things off with a question on the tax, wrapped in strong criticism of the government. Deputy Premier Sarah Hoffman fired back with a response that took a shot at the current instability on the political ‘right’.
This, Alberta voters, is politics in action. Questions are more like statements. Answers are more like rebuttals. The whole charade is a waste of time. Nothing is accomplished during question period except the puffing of chests.
Jean had promised to bring decorum to the legislature. He’s not the first to make such a promise and it’s not the first time the promise has been lost among the hand slapping and jeering from our elected officials.
Sitting back, watching and listening to it all are Albertans with the real question: “is this how we get things done?” Many Canadians hold a low opinion of politicians and you only have to watch question period to understand why.
