Speed and alcohol are both believed to be factors in what police called a “horrific” crash in southeast Calgary Monday night.
At about 9:30 p.m. a vehicle was exiting Deerfoot trail at Bowbottom Trail and Anderson Road.
Police said the vehicle lost control after hitting a snow-covered traffic gore dividing the lanes. It hit a sign, went off the road and into a light standard.
The driver and lone occupant had to be extricated from the vehicle and was rushed to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
His condition has since been upgraded to serious and he is expected to survive.
The collision caused the closure of southbound Deerfoot Trail at Glenmore Trail S.E. for about five hours.
