Check out these headlines from last summer:
“Brian Elliot will be key to Flames success this season.”
“FLAMES SIGN TROY BROUWER!!!!!….and Chad Johnson.”
OK….the caps and exclamation point are mine, but the headline was real. Fact is, one goalie got the summer ‘meet the media’ news conference this summer and it wasn’t Johnson. Now, the headlines read “Johnson keeps cruising’, ‘Johnson terrific again’ as the ex-Buffalo backup has emerged as number one and a fan favourite with a quarter of the season in the books.
One headline you haven’t seen for a while? ‘Flames talking contract extension with Brian Elliot.’ Despite the disappointing start to Elliot’s season, the fact is the Flames are in great shape with the goaltending. If Johnson continues to shine, great! If not, maybe veteran Elliot regains his form. And with only 3.4 million dollars on the payroll for two, with both contracts expiring,
If I’m Brad Treliving, I’m not talking contract with either of them right now. And if Johnson continues to kick out 26 or so shots a night for 45 or 50 games, I’m liking the dollar-cost per save average I’m getting.
