The latest numbers on emergency department wait times are out and for the most part Calgary hospitals are below the national average.
In Calgary if you need to be admitted to hospital, you can expect to wait about 28 hours in emergency before getting a bed-that’s below the average of 29 hours across the country.
But at the South Health Campus the wait to be admitted is almost double, at 50 hours, the highest of any hospital in Alberta.
Kira Leeb, with the Canadian Institute for Health Information explains what that means.
“That number actually means that 90 per cent of people who go to hospital are admitted within that 50 hour period of time if they require admission. It also means that 10 per cent wait longer than that 50 hours.”
Wait times for admittance are much lower at smaller hospitals outside Calgary, such as Claresholm, High River and Vulcan.
The institute also look at hospital deaths; for example someone who is admitted and ends up dying from an infection caught at the hospital. All Calgary hospitals are below the national average in this area
