A province-wide tour defending the right to public long-term care spaces is making a stop in Canmore tonight.
Public health advocate Friends of Medicare and the Canadian Union of Public Employees are hosting the meetings to bring to light concerns about the opening of new private long-term care spaces while closing public beds in cities and towns.
The groups say they’re pleased with the NDP government campaign to open 2,000 public beds that are owned and operated by the province, but now they want to see that plan put into action.
They also want the province to stop approving new private facilities.
A recent report called “Losing Ground” found public facilities provide more hours of direct care per resident per day, which means better patient outcomes.
