A final drive down to the Laval 23 yard line is the as close as the University of Calgary Dinos would come in their quest for their first Vanier Cup since 1995.
The Dinos started the game hot as 5th year Quarterback Jimmy Underdahl would hit Michael Klukas on an 86 yard Touchdown pass to kickoff the scoring just 30 seconds in the game. Calgary would add another touchdown on a 3 yard run from Anthony Anderson in the first before Laval would answer with a touchdown of their own. The teams exchanged field goals and the Dinos headed to the half with a 17-10 lead.
In the third quarter Laval would get the better of Calgary outscoring them 14-3 to give the Rouge et Or a 24-20 lead heading into the fourth.
In the fourth the Dinos would lean on kicker Niko Difonte to provide the offense. Difonte hit two field goals after sustained Calgary drives giving them a 26-24 lead heading into the last 5 minutes.
Cue the heartbreak.
With the Dinos at their own 49 looking to pin Laval deep, Adam Singara had his punt blocked and saw Laval return it down all the way at the Calgary 15. Four plays later a touchdown by QB Hugo Richard put Laval ahead 31-26
Despite a late stop by the U of C defence, and a last minute drive that got the Dinos down to the Laval 23, Calgary couldn’t find the answer and fell to the Rouge et Or at the Vanier cup for a third straight time.
