Expect a decision Friday from the federal cabinet with respect to pipeline developments in Western Canada. The cabinet is to decide on the Northern Gateway project as well as the Line 3, which runs between Hardisty Alberta and the US midwest. A spokesperson for Natural Resources Minister, Jim Carr, says an announcement will follow “shortly thereafter.”
It will be interesting to see how much political capital the Trudeau government is prepared to invest in pipeline development. We still await an announcement on Trans Mountain. That is due by mid December. It seems unlikely that Alberta will get everything it wants and needs. And, of course, we await developments in the United States once Donald Trump becomes President Trump. It seems unlikely the incoming President would be ready to address issues like that as soon as he takes office.
Suffice it to say, we await Minister Carr’s announcement with interest. Notwithstanding the drive to diversify the economy and deal with climate change issues, it would be nice to see a few more people return to the work force.
