The local football spotlight will shine brightly on the Stampeders weekend, and rightfully so, but I’m hoping the Dinos don’t get lost in the glare.
Saturday, Wayne Harris and his crew will battle the heavily favoured Rouge et Or for the Vanier Cup, and while it’s a tall task trying to knock off a program referred to as Canada’s tenth pro team, the fact this team is one of the last two University football teams still standing in this country warrants our respect.
Yes, Blake Nill re-established the Dinos as a perennial contender in his years here, but in the last two years, Harris has taken this program, made it his own, and won with a team lacking in the star power of recent Dino additions. Injury after injury has forced kids who weren’t supposed to see the field for a year or two into starting roles, and they’ve accepted the challenge and taken this team first to a Canada West crown, then to a Mitchell Bowl title.
Yes, the big shot of chili and the cooler full of beer will be reserved for your grey Cup bash on Sunday, but on Saturday, take some time out to check out another team Calgary can be proud of. Go Dinos!
