The Calgary Flames couldn’t overcome a dud of a second period and penalty trouble as they fell to the Buffalo Sabres 4-2, Monday evening.
Calgary got on the board first with a tally from Mikael Backlund on a 3-on-1 opportunity. That would hold for the first 20 minutes.
In the second, the wheels came off for the Flames especially between the 11:27 and the 13:08 portion of the middle frame, when some undisciplined play came back to bite them. In 1:41, the Sabres struck three time with goals from Kyle Okposo, Johan Larsson and Matt Moulson. Okposo’s and Moulson’s were both powerplay goals.
The Flames struck early in the third period to give themselves some hope. Matthew Tkachuk scored his 5th of the season to bring his club within one, but the Sabres responded less then 2 minutes later with another insurance marker, this one from Marcus Foligno. That would be the final score.
Next up for the Flames is a date with the Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.
Puck drop at 5 o’clock.
