A 17-year-old passed away from injuries he sustained during a high-speed crash on 16 Avenue that left four other people injured.
Police said a Mazda was headed eastbound just before 9 p.m. when the driver lost control and crossed the median, striking another vehicle at 19 St. N.E.
Three men in the Mazda, all believed to be in their late teens or early 20’s were rushed to the Foothills Medical Centre in life-threatening condition. Two people in the second vehicle were taken to hospital as a precaution.
Brent Gilchrist was nearby at the time of the crash and told Global News what he saw.
“I saw stuff flying in the area, and when traffic all stopped I was looking a little closer and it looked like there was someone lying on the road. Then people go out of their vehicles,” he said.
Acting Duty Staff Sergeant Travis Juska said police determined excessive speed was involved because of the huge debris field. Charges are pending.
“Depending on how the investigation goes, it could be as serious as dangerous driving causing bodily harm, to a variety of traffic violations,” he said.
The roadway remained closed for hours on Thursday.
