Three young men were rushed to hospital in serious to life threatening condition Thursday after a high speed crash on 16 Avenue.
Police say their Mazda was headed eastbound just before 9 p.m., when the driver lost control, crossed the median and struck another vehicle heading westbound at 19 st. N.E.
Brent Gilchrist was nearby at the time of the crash and tells Global News what he saw.
“I saw stuff flying in the area, and when traffic all stopped I was looking a little closer and looked like there was someone lying in the road. Then people got out of their vehicles.”
All three people in the Mazda were ejected from the vehicle. The two people in the other vehicle were taken to hospital as a precaution.
Acting Duty Staff Sergeant Travis Juska said excessive speed is definitely a factor in the crash given the huge debris field at the scene.
He says charges are pending.
“Depending on how the investigation goes, it could be as serious as dangerous driving causing bodily harm, to a variety of traffic violations.”
Police had to close the roadway for hours.
