Murder charges have been laid in connection with the city’s latest homicide.
Police were called to a home on 47th Street SE on Friday morning for reports of gunshots.
Inside, they found 23-year-old Abiem Kuol Abiem dead.
Investigators were later called to a home in Taradale and took three men into custody following a lengthy standoff.
Matiop Nyok Okich, 21, Benjamin El-Ajak Nyiker, 23, and Akieg Bol, 20, now face charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping.
Investigators believe the shooting was targeted , and say both parties were known to police.
“I don’t know that it’s gang related, ” Insp. Don Coleman said during a Monday news conference. “But it’s a large group of people that are all known to eachother.”
Coleman said the kidnapping charge was laid in connection to a separate, female victim who was “involved in the incident but not a willing participant.”
“The kidnapping of [Abiem] all forms part of the first-degree murder charge – part of intent, and [having] a plan,” Coleman explained. “The other kidnapping charge related to a second victim.”
“I believe the secondary victim was involved prior to – and after – the homicide itself.”
Coleman said the kidnapping victim was not injured.
Investigators are working to determine a motive for Abiem’s death, but Coleman said he believed there was a ‘dispute of some kind’.
Police don’t believe the shooting is connected to a shooting the following day in Bridgeland, which sent one man to hospital.
Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers.
