There are a lot of candidates to try to keep track of in the federal Conservative leadership race but a new poll narrows down who Canadians think would be best for the job.
According to the Mainstreet Postmedia survey released Thursday, the day after the 12 candidates held their first debate, Kellie Leitch leads the field among those surveyed.
The MP, nicknamed Canada’s Donald Trump for her stance on immigration, has the support of 19 per cent of those polled.
Mainstreet President Quitto Maggi points out the parallels between Leitch and Trump-both are anti-establishment candidates that have been accused of pandering to xenophobia.
Following on Leitch’s heels in the poll are Andrew Scheer, Michael Chong, Maxime Bernier, and Erin O’Toole.
Maggi says the rest of the pack is struggling for attention in a very crowded field.
The Tory leadership vote will be held in May.
