City council ground to a halt Monday afternoon as Mayor Naheed Nenshi ordered the removal of Larry Heather.
Heather was up at the podium providing comments on a secondary suite application and the Mayor, trying to get Heather back on topic, was ignored and finally gave the order for Heather to step aside.
The former Mayoral candidate refused and Nenshi ordered security to usher Heather, a regular thorn for council who tries to speak out on a variety of topics, out of the building.
“We always, always, have to respect the process, we always have to give people their time to talk as long as they’re not insulting others or being hateful,” Nenshi told reporters afterwards. “But today, with Mr. Heather, it was a very simple thing. What got him in the end, was the refusal to get away from the microphone when his time was up.”
For the longest time, he refused but eventually relented and was escorted outside.
He was given a notice that he is banned from the building for two years.
However, it appears an exception will be made if Heather decides to run for public office again and has to file nomination papers.
