ASIRT is asking witnesses to come forward as it continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting in the community of Dover. The request includes a specific appeal for video of the incident.
Police arrived in the area of 30 Avenue and 36 Street N.E. around 7 p.m. for reports of a stolen vehicle.
Officers on scene had called HAWCS helicopter to assist them, and as they waited they saw the stolen vehicle drive into an alley in the 3800 block of 30 Avenue S.E.
As the officers pulled up to the stolen 2000 Honda Civic in a marked police car, it reversed and struck the cruiser.
“An officer approached the driver’s side window of the Civic on foot to speak with the driver, who was the lone occupant, and reached into the car in an attempt to put it in park,” ASIRT said in a Friday news release.
“An altercation occurred between the man and the officer. During the struggle, the man was able to put the Civic into motion while the officer’s upper body was in the vehicle.”
ASIRT said a second officer fired his service pistol. The bullet hit the driver, who lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a nearby garbage bin.
Additional officers arrived on scene and the suspect was eventually taken into custody. The suspect remained in hospital in stable condition as of Friday afternoon, after suffering ‘serious’ injuries according to ASIRT.
The officer who was dragged was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
ASIRT is asking anyone who may have witnessed or taken video of the event to contact them at 403-592-4306.
