Recycling is now mandatory for Calgary businesses.
On Tuesday, the city introduced new rules that will help divert waste from the landfill. Items that must be recycled include paper and cardboard, glass, plastic film and containers as well as food cans and foil. Businesses are also required to recycle scrap metal and untreated wood.
“More than half of the waste from businesses is not actually garbage,” said Leanne Michie, a waste diversion specialist with the City of Calgary “Calgary businesses and organizations produce one third of all the waste going to city landfills.”
The changes to the Waste and Recycling Bylaw impact all business and organizations in Calgary, including property management companies, offices, schools and restaurants.
Under the new rules, it falls on the businesses to ensure that recyclables are collected properly and transported to a recycling facility. A directory can be found on the Green Calgary website.
