A police raid in India has struck a blow against scammers who have bilked immigrants in Canada of millions of dollars.
The Better Business Bureau says reports of the “dreaded” Canada Revenue Agency Tax Scam have almost dried up since a bust at a Mumbai call centre earlier this month. The crackdown focused on a call center which was targeting North Americans. 70 people have been arrested and hundreds more are being questioned.
The scam headed Canada’s top ten scams last year. The scammers would target newcomers to the country who were threatened with deportation, imprisonment or even loss of their children if they didn’t give in to demands for money. The BBB says the scam cost Canadian victims $3-million in 2015.
During the week of October 3 – 9, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre received 358 complaints about the CRA scam, but for the week following the bust in India, the number of complaints dropped to just 25.
