The NDP government is spending $9 million to install solar panels on 36 yet to be constructed schools in Alberta.
The schools are in the planning or design phase and have not gone to tender.
Environment Minister Shannon Phillips says this initiative falls under the government’s climate leadership plan to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The government will also establish a committee to evaluate the impact of the installations with a goal of expanding the program over time.
Putting solar panels on schools was a recommendation made by students as a way for the province to demonstrate leadership on tackling climate change.
