A Tory stronghold for decades, the riding of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner will remain so after the federal conservatives easily won Monday’s by-election.
Glen Motz, a retired Medicine Hat police officer, cruised to an easy victory over Liberal challenger Stan Sakamoto and 4 other contenders. Motz claimed almost 70% of the vote compared to 25% for Sakamoto.
The by-election was called after M-P Jim Hillyer died of a heart attack in his Parliament Hill office earlier this year.
The southern Alberta riding has consistently voted conservative for nearly 50 years.
