Already this fall there have been 60 lab-confirmed cases of influenza in Alberta, with half of them in Calgary.
Alberta Health Services is hoping those numbers will prompt people to get a flu shot this year, as vaccination clinics open around the province today. Some pharmacies will also be offering the shots.
Free flu shots will be offered to all Albertans over the age of six months.
This year AHS ordered 1.6 million doses of the vaccine, in the hopes that 35 per cent of Albertans get a flu shot.
Last year nearly 1700 people were hospitalized as a result of influenza. 62 people died from the flu.
