The hope is to combat the rash of poppy box thefts in and around Calgary.
A pilot project in Cochrane will look at the effectiveness of the more secure poppy boxes.
It has a cable that attaches to a small metal box, then is secured to a counter.
The National Legion is watching the pilot to determine if the project can be expanded.
Last year in Cochrane, while $30,000 was raised, $3,000 in donations were stolen from various poppy boxes.
Money raised from poppy sales goes toward various programs aimed at helping veterans.
