A $233 fine for passing on the left with an obstructed view has been given to the driver of a yellow Pensky Rental Truck, who killed Jonathan Sobol and Alec Bracegirdle in a collision near Irricana in August.
It happened on Highway 9, when the 23-year-old tried to pass a tractor trailer on a bend in the road, hitting the pair head-on.
Sobol was a well-known chef that worked at the SE eatery, Starbelly, while Bracegirdle was an up-and-coming online video editor.
Sobol’s girlfriend, Katelin Brand tells Global News that the small fine does not do a justice to the damage caused:
“Took more then just the lives of John and Alec, he took our entire future away, he took our families lives away. He took so much more.”
Sgt. Glen Demmon, also speaking to Global News, explains the tragic incident:
“Believed at the time, taking into all factors, that he was capable of making the pass. It was permitted to do so there, unfortunately very bad judgement.”
Criminal charges are not being pursued.
